On Sunday, September 11, 2011, a 2nd Annual Memorial Golf Tournament is being held in honour of John-Micheal Martin at Whisky Run Golf Course in Port Colborne.
The proceeds from the tournament will benefit local area programs: Women’s Place of Niagara (since he was very involved in the Walk against Violence at Jean Vanier High School), Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO), and the John-Micheal Martin Memorial Scholarship, through the Niagara Community Foundation.
John-Micheal was an amazing young scholar and musician. In 2006 his goal was reached. As an Ontario Scholar, he had just graduated from Jean-Vanier École Secondaire with scholarships in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Music, and French.
Also, he garnered the Principal’s Award. John-Micheal had been accepted to the University of Ottawa in a prestigious Chemistry/Music programme.
Tragically, he drowned in the third week of his summer vacation at the age of 18 yrs. His potential will never be realized.
His parents, John and Diane, are endeavouring to keep his memory alive by giving back to the community, especially to aspiring music and science students in the Niagara Community; to spouses and their families seeking shelter from abuse; and to other grieving parents through BFO which is based in Hamilton and Burlington.
